The toxic substances, including heavy metals leaching into the Danube water system could have a considerable impact on a number of World Heritage sites. Sites in Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia could potentially be under threat.

Toxic sludge that escaped from an industrial plant’s reservoir in Hungary has now reached the Danube, and countries downstream from Hungary including Croatia, Serbia and Romania are preparing emergency plans to cope with the situation.
