Paris GuideAfter Tokyo, Paris hosts the second highest number of Michelin-star restaurants in the world and there are bistros and bars on every street corner. Be aware of high prices and average food around the tourist attractions though!
The city is easy to get around as the Metro is an excellent underground system and is easy to understand (even for non-French speakers!). Get used to using the Metro (which runs till 12.
30am on weekdays and 1. 30am weekends) as taxis can be impossible to find and you will never flag one down in the street even if you do see one. If you know you are heading out/back late, it’s worth seeing if your hotel can make a booking for you.
There are some great districts to head to for nightlife – Montmartre has a number of cafes and jazz bars open al hours; Quartier Latin – Odeon has a student new wave feel, Oberkampf-Menilmontant houses many boho-grunge bars, Bastille has many Central/South American themed bars whilst The Marias has the bulk of trendy new bars, man with a mainly gay and mixed crowd.
There are affordable hotel options in all Paris districts with chains such as Ibis and plenty of comfortable 2 star establishments for under £100 a night. There are literally hundreds of 3 star hotels varying in price from £100-£200 a night; 4 star will cost from £150 upwards and 5 star luxury such as the famed George V and Hotels Le Bristol will cost anything from £600 - £1200 upwards a night though for a real celebration, you really couldn’t pick anywhere better!

About ParisParis, the capital city of France, located in the north of the country is home to over 2 million people within the central 20 arrondissements (districts) and there are over 10 million people living in the wider metropolitan area. The City Of Light (La Ville Lumiere) has the deserved reputation as one of the most romantic cities in the world and with its beautiful architecture, winding River Seine and discreet bistros and bars it is perfect for weekends away. Much of the city, including the river, is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and there are numerous and instantly recognisable landmarks and museums to take in, including the Eiffel Tower, L’Arc de Triomphe, the Pompidou Centre, the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Louvre – home to Mona Lisa, possibly the most famous painting in the world.
It is also hugely influential in the creative industries of design, art, culture, food and fashion in particular and is home to some of the most influential fashion houses in the world including Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Yves Saint Laurent. Paris Fashion Week is probably the most anticipated of the four major fashion weeks and has nurtured the renowned talents of John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. |
