Zagreb GuideThe upper town, is where you will find majority of the old medieval history. One of the main attractions in the Upper Town is the Old Town Gate, which is a memorial and shrine to the Virgin Mary – there are free candles available there for you to light and make a wish and local legend states these wishes come true. It’s worth noting that silence is preferable out of respect when you are walking around and through the gate.
In the summer, the Upper Town is host to groups of artists and musicians and food stalls to celebrate the summer months.
The Maksimir Park and Zagreb Zoo is also a great attraction for all the family. The park is perfect for picnics, and is popular with locals in the summer.
The Zoo is also home to the rare Red Panda. There are also two large lakes in the area – Jarun in the South part of the City and Bundek which hosts shows and firework displays in the summer.
There are many museums to visit in Zagreb, and it’s worth noting that along with many of the historical sites, they close at 1pm on a Sunday and they don’t open again until the Tuesday.
The Mimara Museum is where you will find over 1,500 art exhibits and the Archaeological Museum is home to over 400,000 artefacts dating back to Rome and Egyptians. Eating out is popular with locals and tourists alike. There are many low cost places to eat such a Pizza bars, burger bars and more local food options serving the Dubravica sandwich.
As with any modern metropolitan town there are many high end eateries where it can set you back a reasonable sum i. £50 per head for two courses with wine.
