About BeijingBeijing is the People’s Republic of China’s capital city and second largest city, after Shanghai. The city was also the seat of power for the Ming and Qing dynasties until the formation of the Republic in 1911. Beijing has a wealth of historical sites of interest as well as government institutions and as such, is the country’s cultural, educational and political centre and increased its international reputation hosting the 2008 Olympic Games.
Its history make the city a fascinating place to visit and is made up of 16 districts with the four central districts making up the old walled city of Beijing and the North Western Xicheng District and North Eastern Xicheng District in particular is where you will find most of the visitor attractions, restaurants, hotels, entertainment and shopping. Xicheng District is also home to attractions including Beihai Park, the Houhai area, Beijing Zoo and the National Concert Hall whilst Xicheng includes Beijing Central Station, the Forbidden City – home to the Imperial Court and Tiananmen Square. |
