Samos is also close, as is Rhodes.
Once a small fishing village, Altinkum has become a popular tourist area and many locals are British ex-pats. Therefore it’s a fast developing holiday resort which is very different from what it was 10-15 years ago. Most main roads have now been finished and there are pedestrian areas around main beach.
Boat trips help visitors to discover the beaches, natural coves and bays and these run daily from the beginning of May. There are also water sports, diving courses and fishing tours available for the more adventurous.
Beaches are great here and the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea are ideal for enjoying the sun and sand but there is plenty to do in the town as well, including bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Local cuisine runs alongside Chinese, Italian and British restaurants.
More than 255 different bird species are native to the Bafa Lake which is close to the resort as is the nearby Great Menderes Delta which is popular with ornithologists from all over the world. Like most places in Turkey, there is a wide variety of accommodation available to suit all pockets in Altinkum, with hotels, rentals and B&Bs. The region is popular all year round and there is no part of the year which is “out of season”, making it a popular place for extended winter holidays.
