The city is on the south of the island and enjoys the sunniest coastline and beaches, hence the banana plantations and spectacular flower which bloom everywhere you look. The island is green all year round so those who would wish to avoid the hottest times of year can still enjoy the stunning surrounding landscapes. The Funchal Passenger Ropeway carries tourists from the coast up to the higher parts of the town, known as Monte. Those who enjoy the water can really thrive here, with diving, surfing, boat-trips, swimming with dolphins or watching for whales being popular activities.
Golf is also popular here as are long walks, paragliding or simply relaxing on the beach. The city also has a vibrant and varied nightlife scene and great shopping for visitors wishing to enjoy a little retail therapy or avoid 100% relaxation. The city is known for being particularly safe with minimal crime so it’s safe to be out at any time of day or night. There’s a famous annual wine festival, carnival and flower festival and Christmas and New year are particularly good times to visit.
