The village is opposite a natural lagoon which opens onto the sea. Tourists can enjoy either the main sandy beach or a number of smaller coves under the cliffs. It’s historically a fishing village and has maintained its charm with white houses lining the harbour and its highly coloured boats. Romantic boat trips and fishing trips are popular activities, most water sports are available and there are many golf courses all around the Algarve.
Various organised trips are available including Monchique and Foia, the highest points in the region where you can enjoy wonderful views, buy traditional firewater called Medronho, sample the natural spring water found along the climb to the top or indeed the local honey cake.
There are different types of bars and restaurants lining the streets of the village, many of which have live music.
The original 16th century church in Alvor was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake and shows the great craftsmanship of Manueline architecture.
Like most places in Portugal and its regions, there is a wide variety of accommodation available to suit all pockets in Alvor, including both hotels and dedicated holiday rentals.
