In 1970 it was still a republic in the British Commonwealth but after much political unrest a president was elected in2002.
The Western side borders the Atlantic, with 50 miles of coastline. The Kololi Beach area has great beaches and is the most established resort on the coast. You have the choice of relaxing in the luxurious hotels which are very reasonable for the British tourist.
If you like nightlife then the Senegambia strip has clubs, bars and Casinos and restaurants of different quality. If you prefer a quieter area then Rima has some lovely hotels.
Kololi village is very quiet and you can experience traditional Gambia and appreciate the peace and tranquillity amongst the lush tropical vegetation.
The music is largely reggae and there are many bars with great drinks serving late into the evening.
The beach bars serve up delicious stews and great seafood. There is a wonderful fruit market with many different exotic varieties at very cheap prices.
You will experience the wonderful wildlife in the form of basic jungle trecks to first class jeep and boat safaris with luxury accommodation. There is a huge variety of birdlife and it is home for many varieties of monkeys and the river is home to the wonderful hippopotamus!
You will fly to Banjul which is less than an hours drive from Kololi Beach and hotels will arrange to collect guests.
