Holidays » Spain » Lanzarote HolidaysLanzarote is one of the Canary Islands situated 79 miles from the coast of Africa it is a volcanic island and due to the recent eruptions in the 18th and 19th centuries has many bizarre rock formations which appear almost lunar. The island enjoys a dry climate which is warm all year round making it an ideal holiday resort for all especially families.
Lanzarote was the first of the Canary Islands to have settlers which were the Phoenicians in 1100 B.
The lovely villages here are known for their respect and care of the surroundings and the white washed houses contrast amazingly against the black land formed by volcanic lava. The coastline is blessed with pale soft sand rather than coarse black stones which you might expect. The most popular beach resort is Puerto Del Carmen which is 6 km of fine white sand which is ideal for families however it does tend to get rather full in the summer months.
There are many organised facilities including sun beds and parasols which you can hire on a daily basis which enables you to sit back and relax while you watch your children building sandcastles and splashing in the sea. When it comes to water sports Playa de las Cucharas wins hands down, it offers an abundance of coastal activities although remains a favourite for scuba divers and windsurfers. Lanzarote offers a wide range of cuisines from the catch of the day at a waterside restaurant to tapas and local wine at a more typical Spanish bar the choice is yours. The island truly spoils your taste buds and dining out is usually a pleasurable experience.
Families with children are welcome in all establishments which is reflected in their menus. Puerto Del Carmen is the liveliest of all the resorts and is definitely targeted towards those who want a bit of excitement. The seafront is a neon strip of bars, discos and nightclubs pumping out all the latest sounds and keeping you alive to the early hours of the morning. Those who fancy rubbing shoulders with the locals should head to the capital Arrecife it is littered with some good local Spanish bars which can offer a more peaceful ambiance to suit the more mature tourist.
No matter where you go in Lanzarote you will be promised a good evenings entertainment. If you are looking for somewhere to spend your pennies then Lanzarote is the perfect place for a great shopping experience. The island is duty free and most purchases do not have tax added so set aside a day to shop till you drop. There is an open air market in Teguise which is one of the largest in Europe, it is spilling over with locally made crafts and clothing and to be honest will take hours to explore.
The market is brought to life by many different types of live music at every twist and turn
