Holidays » Greece » Meganissi HolidaysMeganissi is a tiny Greek island which is lush and green with crystal clear waters. It is a perfect setting for couples who want to enjoy a romantic holiday.
Meganissi has three main villages, Vathi, Katomeri, and Spartochori each with their own personal charm and traditional architecture.
The island is full of olive trees and pine trees which reach right to the edge of the sea, it boasts many bays and sea caves where yachts shelter when travelling the Ionian Sea. The most famous cave is Papanikoli cave which is 30 metres deep and local tradition states that it is the hiding place of the famous Papanikoli submarine. Agriculture has for centuries been the occupation of the residents, the most profitable being olive oil. Other working activities include stock breeding, fishing and practical crafts.
All the beaches on Meganissi have wonderful crystal clear waters and are surrounded by dense greenery. They are generally peaceful beaches which do not seem to attract a large tourist population, which makes them an ideal location for a peaceful and relaxing experience. Some of the beaches can only be accessed by boat which departs from Vathy whilst other has easy access by car or motorbike. Agios Ioannis is a long beach on the west coast, it is named after the Agio Ioannis chapel which is located very close to the beach and is well worth a visit.
The coastline tends to be rather narrow and as with most beaches on Meganissi is not very organised so be sure to take your own supplies and sun beds. Spilia beach is located next to Spilia port which is crowded with yachts and boats; it is a white pebble beach which has become an interesting tourist attraction. At Spilia beach there are a couple of facilities such taverns and bars serving local fish recipes. The night life here tends to be based around taverns and restaurants, making it more attractive to more mature couples.
There are one or two clubs on the island which cater for the locals but do not tend to stay open late. The restaurants serve an abundance of fresh fish and vegetables. The locals take pride in their cuisine and offer good levels of service. Do not expect to spend too much time shopping in Meganissi as it is not a shopping island.
Most shops are small and offer only local produce and handicrafts however there are many souvenirs to buy such as embroidered tablecloths, olive oil and thyme infused honey.
