Lesvos is the third largest Greek island, it has virtually been unaffected by the mass tourism of the other popular islands and is deemed to be the perfect place for people who want a more traditional holiday. Lesvos is the home place of numerous noted poets and writers who get their inspiration from the islands rich cultural heritage and natural landscapes. The island is surrounded by quaint fishing villages and inland Lesvos boasts rich fertile soil which gives its home to many olive groves.

Travel upwards into the higher ground and you will find an abundance of fresh smelling pine trees and holme oak. Lesvos is known for many local products one of then being Ouzo, a pungent aniseed liqueur. The villages of Agiasos and Mandamados have the biggest tradition in ceramic art and pieces decorate the homes of most locals. The food in Lesvos is simple yet sophisticated, the cuisine is said to be some of the best in Greece and decorates some of the finest dinner tables.

Lesvos is blessed with an abundance of fresh fish and natural plants and vegetables; it also produces the best olive oil in Greece. There are numerous beaches in Lesvos of all shapes and sizes; some are extremely busy and tacked with tourists and activities whilst others believe it or not are deserted even in summer. The best beach in Lesvos is Skala Eressos, it is a beautifully dramatic beach lined with alternative cafés and restaurants, it is an oasis for families to enjoy. Vatera is a rapidly expanding tourist resort which offers an 8 km long beach with the purest crystal waters.

The area has a combination of natural beauty and historical interest, the ruins of Dionysus an ancient temple can be found here. The hot springs have been well known in Lesvos since the ancient times, they are used to give therapeutic treatments for ailments such as arthritis, skin conditions and much more. Mineral and thermal baths have been present in Greece since around 500 BC, and were commonly built near hot springs and volcanoes. Famous Greek men would meet here and exchange philosophical views whilst receiving treatments.

Lesvos has a variety of places of entertainment and a particularly lively nightlife. There are numerous bars playing all types of music to suit every taste. Petra beach is the best place for live music and if you want to mingle with the locals then go to the waterfront bars and cafés. Lesvos has a impressive array of shops offering gods such as high quality designer labels, jewellery and fine antiques.

As well as the modern shops you can sample make shift shacks on the beach side selling local wares. Most villages on the island have good open air markets offering the best in local produce and handicrafts. .
