Holidays » Greece » Kos HolidaysKos is located in the south east Aegean sea. It is the birthplace of the famous medicine man Hippocrates who was born on the island 460 B.
Kos still maintains many of its old customs; an example of one is the swine slaughter which takes place in October or November. Families are invited together to slaughter a pig and enjoy the delicacies cooked from it. Barrels of local wine are opened and the party begins. One of the most common dances of Kos is the Sianos which means slow.
It is a very simple dance with only 7 steps where men and women hold on to each other with their arms crossed and dance in a circle. Kos has lovely sandy beaches which are perfect for families. Paradise beach is very unique, due to volcanic gases which produce bubbles raising from the sea bed, hence the nick name bubble beach. Kardamena has two amazing long sandy beaches which offer many facilities such as sun beds and water sports or if you prefer just lie back and listen to the waves lap the shore.
Whilst the beaches are perfect for kids, there is also the Lido water park for a bit of adventure. Equipped with a large wave pool, six giant slides and great bars and restaurants, it is a perfect family day out. The Aegean Sea surrounding the island is very warm and very inviting for water sport enthusiasts; choose from water skiing, Para-sending, kite surfing or family banana rides. Travel inland and try some land sports such as go-karting, horse riding or even bungee jumping.
If all this sounds exhausting then just pull up a sun bed and lie on the beach until the beautiful sun sets on the horizon. The bar mile is an attraction that makes Kos town known as a party island, there are hundreds of bars and clubs each with their own theme pumping out loud music encouraging everyone to dance the night away. Kos does however offer a large number of taverns and restaurants where visitors can enjoy the more local cuisine accompanied by traditional dance and songs. Kos town has shops peeping out of every corner.
You will find virtually everything here, from souvenirs to jewellery and clothing. There is also a very popular indoor market selling local produce and handicrafts. Most of the shops in the town are open all day long and some Greek kiosks called peripteros stay open 24 hours a day selling snacks and groceries. Kos offers endless summer sunshine and is a true tourist Mecca.
It has a semi-tropical climate and all through the year the temperatures are pleasant. The islands summers are also very dry and it is almost unheard of to have any rain at this time of year. .
