The islands of
Malta are in the heart of the Mediterranean. Maltese is the official Language of the islands, and after 150 years of British rule English has become an official language. The origin of Maltese can be traced to the Phoenician occupation of the islands, the language has survived influences from the Roman language for many of years, however, traces of Sicilian, Italian, Spanish, French and English can still be found.
Catholicism plays a key role in Malta, and every town or village has at least one church belonging to a certain Saint. Villages have traditional feasts to celebrate the anniversary of their patron saints. Fine craft work such as handmade lace, hand woven fabrics and blown glass can still be seen on the island. Malta's cuisine is captivating with a large influence from Sicily.
